I’m so excited to share this week’s guest blog post from our friend Chrissy (who I will always call CC). CC was one of the first people that I met my freshmen year at college. She lived just a few doors down from me and a few years later she became one of my roommates in the house that we rented. We’ve known each other for over 10 years and even though distance keeps us a part most of the time I love that we can continue to connect through life’s changes. Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family?
A: My husband Adam and I have been married for nine years and have two children, Claire (5) and Garrett (2). I am a high school science teacher and Adam runs his family’s organic dairy farm. Living on an organic farm has really molded our entire lifestyle. We eat organic food whenever possible and we stay away from harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances.
Q: How did you first get interested in essential oils?
A: I actually avoided essential oils for the longest time. I didn’t know anything about them and I wasn’t about to jump on the bandwagon just because everyone else was. Finally, I started doing some research for myself and realized that essential oils were the perfect complement to our natural lifestyle. Once I tried them, there was no turning back. Essential oils do so much more than just smell good! We’ve been able to makeover our entire medicine cabinet and replace it with natural options that I trust to use on my entire family, even my young children.
Q: How do essential oils work?
There are three ways to use essential oils: aromatically (smelling them), topically (applying them to your body), and internally (ingesting in water or capsules). I personally feel confident ingesting this particular brand of pure, therapeutic grade oils. (Which brand? Email me here to find out) However, if you do not feel comfortable with ingesting oils, don’t do it! There are so many benefits that can be experienced aromatically and topically!
When you smell an essential oil, the scent quickly enters the nasal passage where it comes into contact with the olfactory bulb. The olfactory bulb engages the limbic system of the brain which sends messages to certain areas of the brain that are responsible for helping you focus, calm down, wake up, etc… That’s why certain memories can trigger a particular memory.
When you apply something to your skin, it is absorbed by your body and can be in your blood stream within 28 seconds! This includes all of those unpronounceable chemicals in your lotions, soaps, and cleaning products…Yuck! When applied topically, essential oils can support overall health and wellness in so many ways- too many to even list!
While essential oils are amazing, and we use them every things day, they are not a magic bullet. They are a part of our healthy lifestyle, but they are not the only thing. We eat well, we avoid harsh chemicals, we are pretty active, and we use essential oils. All of those pieces together have kept our family healthy.
Q: What do you see as the biggest benefits of oils?
For me, the biggest benefit has been the empowerment that I feel in having natural solutions to help support my family. When your children are sick, it can be the most helpless feeling in the world! Having essential oils in my arsenal has completely changed that. I no longer reach for a synthetic medication that I’m not sure how much to give or how often I can give it.
I believe that the pendulum is swinging. Each of us knows, deep down, that there has to be a better way. Being able to turn to our oils as a first line of defense is so empowering!
When my kids come to me to ask for an oil to support whatever ailment they have at that moment, that is the most amazing feeling! I’m teaching them that there are alternatives and that they can support their bodies naturally.
Q: What are your favorite oils?
Lemon: I put a few drops in my water daily to help support detox, digestive health, and weight management. I also have started making my own household cleaner by adding a few drops of lemon oil and a splash of vinegar to a spray bottle of water.
Peppermint: I love peppermint and Wild Orange in the diffuser in the morning to help wake me up! I also like to add a drop of each to the back of my neck when I hit my late afternoon slump. Peppermint is also excellent for relieving head tension and occasional stomach discomfort.
Calming Blend: This blend is amazing for calming anxious feelings! I use it as my perfume during the day to keep me grounded and apply it to my feet at night to help me sleep more restfully.
Protective Blend: This blend contains the same antioxidant support as eating a bus-full of blueberries! We’re diligent about applying this blend to our feet every morning before we all head off to the germ-factories we call school. Since starting to use essential oils, my kids have not missed a day of daycare due to the normal sickies that run rampant through those centers. Maybe it’s a coincidence, but I doubt it…
Soothing Blend: This is our go-to blend for before and after exercise or a rough day of work. It’s perfect for soothing tired and stressed muscles.
Q: Are there any products to support fertility?
Absolutely! There are some amazing supplements that anyone can benefit from! They support reducing your body’s toxic load while promoting healthy body system function and healthy cell growth. There is also an oil blend called the Monthly Blend for Women that can help to regulate hormones. Finally, it’s so important to eat a clean diet full of good fats!
