I had this video sent to me last week from one of my sweet, new friends at work. I’m sure many people with young children can relate to this, but I rarely watch any T.V. that doesn’t involve some sort of animation, let alone any T.V. in “real time.” That has become a thing of the past for me. Thank goodness for Netflix!
Anyways, my friend sent me this video and I actually took the time to watch it. Many times, I’ll put it in a “to read/watch” later file, or have the best intentions of watching it, but never get around to it. But, this day she got me at the perfect time.
I’m sure some of you have already seen, or maybe watched this video of Mandy Harvey in real-time, but even if you have I think it’s still worth watching a second time. This woman reminded me last week that we can never give up on our dreams, even if life gives us a huge set back that we’re sure we can’t overcome. Mandy is deaf and suffers from a connective tissue disorder, but her passion and dreams revolve around music, and lucky for us she didn’t give up. She didn’t let herself stew in her new disability, or forget about her passion.
The whole notion of changing your journey or path due to circumstances out of our control reminds me of my Aunt Linda (who this whole site is dedicated to). Linda was a gifted artist. When she got sick with scleroderma the first part of her body to be affected was her hands. They began to deteriorate. The infection got so severe in her hands, she had to have two fingers amputated. One would think that would end an artists’ career. But, it didn’t end Linda’s. She continued to paint and draw. Of course the way that she held the tools was different, but the talent that God gave her was still there.
Linda also taught her craft to many students. Almost up until her last days. She taught a variety of art classes, where she went to school. Linda spread her passion for art to many, many students over the years. Who knows where one of those students could take their new skills she gave them and what they will create.
Friends, if you’re struggling with a stalled dream, or with a dream that just doesn’t seem unattainable, I urge you watch this video. It will give you hope and courage to take that next step forward. Sometimes the smallest step can end up to be the largest step of your life. If you’re still having doubts, rest on these words:
26 But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.
– Matthew 19:26 (NKJV)
Enjoy this beautiful music and story. Think of everything that Mandy had to overcome to get where she is today. Think about the time that Mandy had to invest to get where she is today. I do have to warn you – this is not mascara friendly.
Three items I’m grateful for:
- All of my wonderful cousins. I’m so lucky to have a big family who loves and cares about us.
- The pool at our new house – it’s been helping with this heat and being nine months pregnant.
- Owen – he reminds me every day of miracles and that what people (even the smallest people) can overcome.
Blessings to you and yours,
